Manchebo Beach Aruba - The Home to Turtle Nests
The lovely season of the Leatherback Sea Turtle has started again. The turtles return to their natal beach in order to nest during the turtle-nesting season, which starts around April and normally by August the turtles are all hatched.
Manchebo Beach is the home to multiple nests of the Leatherback Sea Turtle each year. Normally one female makes about 7 nests per season with an interval of 9 or 10 days. She lays about 115 eggs a clutch. The eggs on the beach are protected with red & white barricades.
Turtugaruba, the local foundation that protects the sea turtles in and around Aruba, monitor the beaches every morning at daybreak. Eagle Beach is patrolled not only at dawn but also at night, whenever a female Leatherback is expected to return for her next nest, which could be between 22.00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. The turtle nests are protected during incubation (60-70 days) and hatching. It is estimated that only 1 in 1000 hatchlings survives to maturity. In 2008 the volunteers of Turtugaruba spotted, monitored and protected more than 48 nests on Eagle Beach and more on Boca Grandi and Parke Arikok. Let’s hope this year will be good as well!
Guests of the Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa can sign up their name on the “Turtle Watch List” at the front desk and be informed by telephone in their room when a turtle is nesting or when a nest of baby turtles is hatching. It is a wonderful experience and it will definitely be a motivation for you to help protecting these amazing creatures and wildlife in general. If you are interested to join the hatching of the turtles on our beach or if you want more information, please contact the front desk: 582-3444. To protect a nesting turtle or a nest, call Turtugaruba: 964-9138 or for more information visit their web site at www.turtugaruba.org.
