Manchebo Beach Aruba - The Home to Turtle Nests

The lovely season of the Leatherback Sea Turtle has started again. The turtles return to their natal beach in order to nest during the turtle-nesting season, which starts around April and normally by August the turtles are all hatched.
Manchebo Beach is the home to multiple nests of the Leatherback Sea Turtle each year. Normally one female makes about 7 nests per season with an interval of 9 or 10 days. She lays about 115 eggs a clutch. The eggs on the beach are protected with red & white barricades.

Turtugaruba, the local foundation that protects the sea turtles in and around Aruba, monitor the beaches every morning at daybreak. Eagle Beach is patrolled not only at dawn but also at night, whenever a female Leatherback is expected to return for her next nest, which could be between 22.00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. The turtle nests are protected during incubation (60-70 days) and hatching. It is estimated that only 1 in 1000 hatchlings survives to maturity. In 2008 the volunteers of Turtugaruba spotted, monitored and protected more than 48 nests on Eagle Beach and more on Boca Grandi and Parke Arikok. Let’s hope this year will be good as well!

It is a wonderful experience and it will definitely be a motivation for you to help protecting these amazing creatures and wildlife in general. If you are interested to join the hatching of the turtles on our beach or if you want more information, please contact the front desk: 582-3444. Aruba Coast Guard’s Breakthrough in Caribbean Orca Science

On November 3, 2009 the Aruba Coast Guard, Gino Werleman photographed an Orca pod in waters between the South -coast of Aruba and Paraguana, Venezuela. These pictures made it possible to create a dorsal fin identification database of orcas in the Caribbean waters, because 3 orcas in this group are now recognizable.

Jaime Bolanos from Sea Vida Venezuela, who in 2008 published a scientific paper on Orca sightings at the Venezuela coast for the International Whaling Commission (IWC), has dispersed the information to local and international contacts and scientists covering the entire region.
It would be wonderful if the Orcinus Orca could unite the entire Caribbean basin as one collaborative opportunistic sighting data collection effort.

‘The Guardian’-Orca family consists of at least one adult male, 1 adult female, and 3 calves/juveniles. The Aruba Marine Mammal Foundation (AMMF) is very interested in finding out if this group belongs to the marine mammal-eaters or the fish eaters. Orca marine mammals-eaters migrate long distances while the fish eaters are known to remain in a smaller territory. There are indications that they might be marine mammal eaters.

The AMMF want to thank the Aruba Coast Guard who has made this exciting start possible of a Caribbean data base, and for their loyal support in protecting the Aruba wild dolphins since 1998. In honor of this support, AMMF have baptized the largest male orca as “The Guardian” (as the movie about the coast guard), and committed to naming other recognizable ones of this group with names starting with the letter G.

St. Michael’s School Graduates enjoy a day at Manchebo

dsc04013.JPGJune 27, 2007 – Eagle Beach – Graduates of St. Michael School of Brasil, Aruba enjoyed a great “working” experience at Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa. The 17 students of teacher Gordon Keggie in the age range of 12-14 years received a grand tour of the resort and had an opportunity to work hands on for a couple of hours with Manchebo’s staff in the restaurant, housekeeping, maintenance, beach, garden and front desk departments. Teacher Gordon enjoyed the great enthusiasm of his students while working with the Manchebo team during the morning and had many requests from his students to soon return for more experiences. “It was a real pleasure for us to host this young group of students. With tourism as the pillar of Aruba’s economy we certainly hope to have inspired some youngsters to choose for a career in tourism in the coming years” says Edgar Roelofs, director of operations. Of course the students enjoyed the resort’s hospitality as well with a nice lunch at the cafeteria..
